A varsity football standout for four years at tackle, Battaglino had the distinction of starting 39 straight games between 1966 and 1969. One of the last football players to play both offense and defense, Battaglino co-captained the Indians in 1969 when Clary Anderson took over as head football coach. An excellent blocker on offense and a deadly tackler on defense, Battaglino was selected to the Eastern College Athletic Conference, Division III weekly all-star team for his outstanding play in Montclair State’s 21-12 win over East Stroudsburg. Montclair posted an 8-2 record in Battaglino’s senior year and was ranked among the best Division III teams in the East.
