It is for certain that whenever a writer takes on the task of writing an article on Carol Blazejowski, he or she will curse the editor for lack of space. After all, there is just not enough room to list the accomplishments this one athlete achieved at Montclair State. Still considered to be one of the most dominant players to have played women’s basketball, Blazejowski finished her career at MSC as the all-time leading scorer in school history with 3,199 points. When she was playing, the only collegians with over 3,000 points were LSU’s Pete Maravich and Portland State’s Freeman Williams. In her senior year, Blazejowski led MSC in just about every category. She averaged 38.6 points per game, 9.9 rebounds and had 92 steals and was third in assists with 95. That year she set the single-season record with 1,235 points. A three-time Kodak Women’s All-American selection, the “Blaze” holds single-game scoring records at Madison Square Garden and a Pauley Pavillion, a 41-point performance during the consolation round of the AIAW Championship Tournament when Montclair los to UCLA in its Final Four appearance. A career average of 31.7 points per game, Blazejowski was also the first winner of the annual Wade Trophy for the Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. Blazejowski would go on to work in a variety of roles in the National Basketball Association (NBA) before moving on to the WNBA where she would serve as the president and general manager of the New York Liberty, one of the league’s original franchises. During her tenure the Liberty made 10 playoff appearances, won three Eastern Conference championships and made the WNBA Finals four times. Blazejowski returned to her alma mater in 2011 as Associate Vice President for University Advancement.
