When Fred Hill is mentioned in passing conversation, it is rare to find someone who does not recognize that name, especially in New Jersey. A bonafide coaching “legend” in the state, Fred Hill began his outstanding career at Montclair State coaching baseball and football. He became known for his knowledge of the games and how he taught them. Through eight years with Montclair, Hill compiled the best record ever as a head football coach at 52-16-1, a .722 winning percentage. Included in those seasons was a 10-2 record in 1981 when Montclair reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Playoffs and an undefeated squad the following year (8-0-2). During the spring, one could find Hill on the baseball diamond coaching his MSC teams to a 148-91-2 record in six years. Overall, Hill won and even 200 ball games at Montclair State and a winning percentage of 64 percent.
