John Smith quickly developed into a premier goal scorer and was a valuable asset to Montclair State soccer from 1967-71. He was the second-greatest goal scorer in MSC history and was a four-time N.J. State College All-Star, a New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware All-American twice and a 1970 Metropolitan Soccer League All-Star. As a freshman, he topped the team in goals scored and a year later led them to their first NCAA Tournament. In his junior year he was honored as one of the “Outstanding Athletes of America” and was MSC’s Most Valuable Player. His style of play and athletic skills earned him an invitational to the 1969-1970 Olympic Trials.
