Kevin Cooney’s history of baseball at Montclair State College in a series of shining moments leading to triumph. He came to the college in the fall of 1968, and in four years he complete four season of both fall and spring baseball six of which were on the varsity level. In 1971, Cooney was named to the All-Conference team after a 6-2 record. In 1972, he improved to 9-0 which was not an easy feat since one game versus East Stroudsburg went to 14 innings and another against Adelphi went 10 innings. Not only did he set the best season record for a pitcher, the best career record for a pitcher (18-3) and the single- season record for fewest walks by a pitcher, but his team won the first NCAA Tournament game in Montclair State history beating Adelphi, 3-2. In his last season with the Indians he was selected All-New Jersey College, All-District and earned the Charles Turek Award for Dedication and Leadership. Cooney would later become the head coach of the baseball program in 1984 and reach the NCAA Division III World Series in a each of his four seasons winning the school’s first national championship in 1987. He then went on to a very successful coaching sting at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
