In the Spring of 1989 during her senior season when Linda Giarrusso was in the midst of an outstanding campaign and in a newsparer article written about her, the headline read "One 'Little' Indian", in reference to the diminutive second baseman who stood alittle taller than five feet. Give in the nickname "Preemie" by her teammates because of her small stature, "Preemie" became one the premier players that the Montclair State softball program has produced. A four-year letterwinner, Giarrusso was iright in the middle of Montclair's rise to national prominence in the mid-late 1980s. She appeared in 159 games in her four years. During that time with the then Indians, Montclair posted a 125-47 record, winning two regional championships (1987 & 1988) and the school's first NJAC crown (1989) while making four straight postseason appearances. Giarrusso was a two-time All-American earning the honors in 1987 and 1989, the latter coming when she batted .415 with 49 hits, 30 runs scored, 11 stolen bases and 19 RBI. When she left the Montclair State program, Giarrusso, who also earned multiple All-NJAC and All-Region honors, ranked in the Top 5 all-time in 12 different categories and held the records for career triples (14) and fielding assists (227). In addition she ranked second in total bases (200), runs scored (92) while finishing third all time in batting average (.359), slugging percentage (.473), games played and hits.
