In the history of Montclair State Athletics, there have been some incredible individual game performances – Carol Blazejowski’s record 52 points at Madison Square Garden and Sam Mills’ 22-tackles against Southern Connecticut are two of them. On a Sunday afternoon in Glassboro, NJ in 1992, Lois Fyfe put together perhaps the finest DAY by any athlete. With the Red Hawks facing elimination in the NCAA Regional, Fyfe pitched and hit Montclair to two victories forcing a deciding game with the winner heading to the World Series. Rain had already extended the tournament to the last possible moment, so instead of a day’s rest the Red Hawks played again – and won as Fyfe won her third game of the afternoon and also drove in a pair of runs as MSU defeated William Paterson 5-2 to advance to the national tournament in Pella, Iowa. At the NCAA Championship, Fyfe once again carried Montclair State helping the Red Hawks finish third, the best finish in school history. Already named All-NJAC, All-Reion and All-America that season, Fyfe would be selected as the NCAA Division III Player of the Year. It was the exclamation point to a brilliant career that had come full circle for Fyfe would would be third into the spotlight as a freshman in 1989. With Montclair’s top pitcher going down to injury, Fyfe became the No. 1 hurler on the staff and helped the then-Indians to its first NJAC Championship with a 2-1 win over Kean. The following season Fyfe began her dual role as hitter and pitcher and by the end of her career she had etched her name all over the Montclair State record book. Fyfe set the career mark for doubled (40) and was second in slugging percentage (.582). In the pitching circle, no player threw more innings (751.0) than the right hander and she also set marks for appearances (129) and complete games (99) while finishing her career with 64 wins, including a perfect game against Rutgers-Camden during the 1990 season.
