In 1968 as a junior Harmon was the National Collegiate Gold Medalist in the 100 meter hurdles and the 200 meter hurdles and the long jump. She along with teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Denise Wood made up a two-athlete team which took second place in the national championship in Texas. At that point Harmon had Hall of Fame written into her future. She participated in all four years in track and field and besides the aforementioned events she also specialized in the high jump. She heled the record for the 100 meter hurdles running a time of 15.2 seconds in 1968.
