Much of the credit for Montclair’s State’ success on the basketball court from 1970 through 1974 had to go to Mary Jean Hayek. A center, she led the team in scoring for three years and scored 702 points while posting and average of 12.5 per game. She was the teams’ leading rebounder each season and collected a total of 530. During her freshman and sophomore years, MSC reached the final rounds of the Stat Tournament winning in 1971 and placing third in 1972. Hayek paced the 1973 team to victory in the N.J. Women’s Intercollegiate Championship Game. She was the team captain for the 1973-74 seasons and spearheaded MSC’s drive to second State Championship. Hayek would go on to play for the N.J. Gems of the Women’s Basketball League (WBL) in the late 1970s.
