A 1,000-point scorer during his three-year varsity basketball career (1,247), Paul Szem won seven varsity letters at Montclair State. One of the best shooters to ever wear a Montclair State uniform, Szem averaged 18.4 points per game for his career and led the Indians to records of 17-9, 16-12 and 19-9. He was a First-Team New Jersey State College Athletic Conference selection in both 1963 and 1964. A top-flight golfer, Szem placed third in the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference Championships in 1964. He also won the District 31 NAIA javelin throw in 1962. Szem coached the Montclair State freshman basketball teams in 1966 and 1967 posted records of 21-3 and 19-0, respectively.
