Few athletes have contributed more to a sport at Montclair State than Bob Lester did to basketball. Playing three seasons for coach Ollie Gelston, Lester helped put the Indians on the national basketball map. In his three varsity years at Montclair State the Indians posted won-loss records of 24-3, 20-8 and 21-5. I 1968-69 the Indians appeared in the National Collegiate Athletic Association College Division Baseball Tournament at Evansville, Indiana for the only appearance in a national final round. Lester scored 996 points in his three-year career and set the career mark for rebounds at 1,271. He was the first player in Montclair State history to record over 1,000 career rebounds. Lester also set the single-game record for rebounds with 35 and the season mark at 516.
