A versatile athlete in the late 1950s for Montclair, Wes Rehberg played football for two years and ran for the track team for four seasons. A co-captain of the track team his senior year, Rehberg was an All-American athlete in track in 1961. In 1960 and 1961, Rehberg was an All-District selection in various outdoor events while also winning the 100, 200 and 400 meters in the NJ State AAU Championships. Rehberg was voted the Outstanding Athlete Award by the Metropolitan Conference in 1961, while setting school records in the 220, 440, 660 and 800-yard races that year. Rehberg was also the national medalist in the National AAU Indoor Championships, a third-place finish in the 600-yard dash.
