Baseball Falls to Ramapo in NJAC Championship Game, 8-3

Red Hawks Finish Season at 23-20

Union, NJ - The Montclair State baseball team came up short in its bid for its first conference title in 15 years as the Red Hawks fell to Ramapo 8-3 in the NJAC Championship Game on Sunday at Kean University's Jim Hynes Stadium.

RYAN THIEME, RYAN LONG and KEVIN ALONSO each drove in a run as MSU completed its season at 23-20. Montclair State was was making its first conference title game appearance since 2006 and was in the championship round of the NJAC Tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Montclair reached Sunday's final after posting a 5-4 victory over the Roadrunners last Saturday evening. Meeting for the third time in the tournament in four days, including twice in less than 24 hours, Ramapo jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second as Bobby Shannon drove in a run with a single. NJAC Player of the Year Joe Venturino and Brandon Martinez added RBIs in the third inning and Shannon's run-scoring single in the fourth gave the Roadrunners a 4-0 cushion.

Ryan Rinsky also drove in a run in the fourth and Ramapo added two more in the seventh for a 7-0 lead. Venturino singled home the first run with Connor Walsh picking up an RBI double.

The Red Hawks would finally get on the board in the seventh when Alonso was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Long plated another on a fielder's choice with Thieme added an RBI single trimming the lead to 7-3.

A wild pitch in the ninth allowed Matthew Chemis to score with the final Ramapo run.

Eli Garcia (3-1) got the victory as he went the first 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs and six hits, striking out three and walking two. Jon Brignoni registered the final seven outs striking out two. DONALD CUSICK took the loss for Montclair State and he closed out the year at 3-2.

Senior KEITH MURPHY had two hits for Montclair State.
