Montclair State Turns Back Owls, 38-7

New Haven, CT – Displaying its best offense of the season, Montclair State scored its fifth victory in six starts here at Bowen Field yesterday in the Eastern Football Conference, downing Southern Connecticut State, 38-7.

Leading only 10-7 at the halftime, Coach Clary Anderson's Indians scored four times in the second half to turn the game into a rout.

The Indians defensive unit turned the tide of battle in the second half, recovering two fumbles and blocking an Owl punt that set up three quick scores.

Southern Connecticut State took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when fullback Gordon Taylor tallied an on a 40-yard trap play up the middle. Larry Kimball converted from placement and a 7-0 lead.

Montclair State's first points came on a 36-yard field goal by BOB BREWSTER in the second quarter. The Indians moved ahead to stay on a 67-yard march that took just five plays. The big gainer was a 45-yard pass from quarterback RON GARA to halfback JOHN DALLY to the Owls' nine yard line. Fullback TONY VALPONE, who had the best scoring ay of his career, caught a nine-yard pass from Gara for the touchdown. Brewster kicked the first of five consecutive extra points to put the Indians up, 10-7, at halftime.

Montclair State got on the scoreboard quickly in the third period after a poor pass from center caused the punter Kimball to fall on the ball on his six-yard yard line. Glen Morchauser went over on fourth down from the one.

Defensive back ALEX KAPLANOVICH set up the second TD for the Indians in the third period when he recovered a fumble on the home team's 34. Valpone carried four times and blasted his way into the end zone from the 13.

A blocked punt by linebacker JIM PONDILLO gave Montclair State the ball on the Southern Connecticut State 11-yard line in the fourth period. Valpone went over from the one. The final TD cam on a 59-yard march on five plays with GREG WHITE passing 40 yards to GUY BONNANO.
