Montclair State Gets Hampden-Sydney as Rockne Foe

Virginia's Hampden-Sydney College yesterday to meet Montclair State this Saturday in the second annual Knute Rockne Bowl at the Convention Hall in Atlantic City.

Hampden-Sydney (9-1) defeated Randolph-Macon Saturday for the Mason-Dixon Conference championship to win the bid from the NCAA. Hampden-Sydney was also the winners of last year's initial Knute Rockne Bowl, defeating the University of Bridgeport, 28-27.

The game will decide the East Regional titlist of the NCAA's College Division 2.

Hampden-Sydney has a rugged defense led by 185-pound linebacker Mike Liedy. The Tigers lost their first game of the year to Maryville, Va. 6-0 and have since won nine straight. In that nine-game span, they have yielded a total of 22 points.

The offense, much like Montclair State's this season has sputtered, but Hampden-Sydney has a talented halfback in Tracy Powers, a freshman who carried 56 times for 216 yards in Saturday's 12-7 decision over Randolph-Macon. The Tigers are coaches by Stokely Fulton.

They will meet a Montclair State (8-1) team that gave up only 45 points in nine games while winning the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference title and finishing second to Central Connecticut State – the only team to defeat the Indians this year – in the Eastern Football Conference.

Saturday's game will be the first bowl appearance in the history of Montclair State. The Indians were scheduled to play Drexel in the Convention Hall in 1963 but the game was canceled after the assassination of President Kennedy.
