Bayonne, NJ – Scoring once in three of the four periods, Montclair State won its seventh football victory in eight starts at Veteran's Memorial Field before 3,006 fans in the New Jersey State College Conference game, downing Jersey City State, 21-7.
Coach Clary Anderson's Indians, defending conference champions, set the stage for the showdown next Saturday against Glassboro State for the conference crown. The Profs from South Jersey are 2-0.
Morchauser, a junior from Paramus, was the scoring star for the Indians with three touchdowns. Sharing honors with Morchauser was senior fullback
TONY VALPONE of Somerset, who set a single-game rushing mark of 192 net yards on 31 carries. The old standard was 163 yards set by halfback Rich Higgins against Delaware State in 1965.
Valpone also took a major step toward becoming the Indians' all-time career rushing record-holder. The 215-pound fullback now has a total of 1,728 yards in his three-year career and needs only 58 yards against Glassboro State to equal Dom Deo's 1,796-yard mark.
The Indians marched 55 yards in just four plays in the first period to get on the scoreboard. Morchauser carried the last 21 yards on a sweep of Jersey City's right end.
BOB BREWSTER kicked the first of three extra points to put Montclair State in front, 7-0.
A fine 29-yard punt return by
LONNIE MONCELSI set up the winner's second TD in the third period. The return gave the Indians the ball at the Gothic' 13. Grinding out the yards in smack chunks, the Indians took eight plays to score with Morchauser slamming over from the one.
The final Montclair State touchdown came on a 71-yard march that took 10 plays. The big gainer in the drive was a 37-yard run by Valpone. Morchauser went over from the Jersey City 8. Brewster kicked the extra point.
Jersey City was unable to mount any scoring march whatsoever until the final two minutes. The key play in the 96-yard march was a 73-yard run by John Mansi while back to punt on fourth down in his own territory.
Mansi passed eight yards to Bill Byrne for the Gothics' touchdown with 1:56 left in the game. Ray Bohn converted from placement.
In addition to Valpone's single-game record, the Indians picked off four Jersey City passes to run their total for the season to 20. This bests by one the previous mark of 19 set last year.
