Washington, DC -- The Montclair State field hockey team capped off a record-setting season with a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Catholic University in the championship game of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Tournament on Sunday.
The championship is the second for Montclair State (15-4), which set a school record for wins. MSU won the title in 1990 at Sprague Field with a victory over Rowan.
LEA SMITH (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) scored the game winner goal in the 32nd minute while Most Valuable Player TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) made eight saves, including one on a penalty stroke to preserve the victory.
Smith gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead as she took hold of a cross from
ANDREA ULICNY (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood Regional) and slammed it past a diving KATIE IONNACONE (Havertown, PA/Villa Marina).
MSU nearly made it a 2-0 lead in the second half, but a
LAURA POPES (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) shot from the left side hit the post.
