Kean Knocks Off Women's Basketball

Upper Montclair, NJ -- Sophomore forward Shervon James (Clifton, NJ/William E. Grady (NY) posted a double-double and led four players in double figures as Kean University posted a 74-62 victory over Montclair State University this evening in women's basketball action.

With the win, Kean improves to 5-2, and 5-0 in the NJAC, while Montclair State falls to 3-4, and 2-3 in the NJAC. James finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds as Kean took control of the game in the second half holding a double-digit lead for the entire period.

JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) had 18 points and six rebounds for Montclair State. In a foul plagued first half the Cougars were able to control the play opening up leads of 11 and nine points before entering halftime with a 32-21 advantage. In the half, Kean's Kellie Rice (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) scored eight points, while MSU's KATHY BARBERI (Whitestone, N.Y./Francis Lewis) led the Red Hawks with five points and six rebounds.

Barberi would later leave the game in the second half with an injured left leg. In the second half, Kean came out strong and eventually built a 19-point lead behind the strong inside play of Jaquana Abdullah (Brooklyn, N.Y./South Shore). Abdullah scored all of her 14 points in the second stanza. For the Cougars, sophomore Janae Brumby (Trenton, N.J./Trenton) scored 13 points and had three steals rebounds, while Rice finished with 14 points.

In the loss, STEPHANIE CROLEY (Plainfield, N.J./Piscataway) scored 12 points, had nine rebounds and five steals, while STEPHANIE ELLERBE (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) scored 12 points for the Red Hawks.
