Popes Tallies Twice as MSU Topples No. 1 TCNJ, 4-3 in OT

Upper Montclair, NJ - Senior midfielder and MSU top scorer LAURA POPES (West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Regional) scored two goals on the evening, including the game-winning marker in sudden-death overtime, and added an assist as the Montclair State University field hockey team edged the College of New Jersey, 4-3, tonight at Sprague Field.

Montclair is now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play, while TCNJ, ranked sixth in NCAA Division III, drops to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Tonight marked MSU's first win over TCNJ since a 2-0 victory back on Oct. 17, 1980.

Popes scored on a rush from midfield in the extra session, lofting a shot up and off TCNJ goalkeeper Sara Bouroult (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) at 78:39 as MSU won in overtime for the second time in its last three outings. Popes had earlier scored MSU's third goal of the night, late in the first half, to pull the Red Hawks into a 3-3 deadlock with the visiting Lions before a scoreless second half.

TCNJ sophomore forward Christie Shore (Souderton, PA/Souderton) opened the scoring just 6:13 into the night, before sophomore forward LEA SMITH (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) answered for MSU at 9:57. Junior forward Abbie Smith (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) regained the lead for the Lions just 62 seconds later, before MSU senior defender JANEL BERTINI (Erial, NJ/Highland) knotted matters once again at 14:57 off a pass from Popes.

TCNJ went ahead one more time as senior midfielder Megan McCall (Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) scored off a penalty corner at 29:25 before Popes connected for Montclair with 2:13 remaining in the opening half for her fourth goal of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) finished with 10 saves for the Red Hawks, including three stops in overtime, while Bouroult made eight stops for the Lions.
