Men's Soccer Dominates Centenary

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/11/02) - Playing its first home game at Sprague Field since 1999, MSU (9-2-2 overall) raced out to a 4-0 halftime lead en route to its second straight shutout victory and ninth this fall.

Sophomore forward LEO CARABALLO (Totowa, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) scored twice for the Red Hawks, while junior back STEVE LEONARD (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) tallied three assists to go along with his three goals in MSU's previous game.

Montclair State took a 1-0 lead at the 13:25 minute mark of the first half as JESSEN VAN SYCKLE (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) tapped in a pass from Leonard for his second goal of the season. Four minutes later, MSU extended the lead to 2-0 as MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) fired in a defelcted pass by Centenary goalkeeper Oda Tetsuya.

ATIBA YUSUF (East Orange, NJ/East Orange) notched his seventh goal of the season for a 3-0 lead at 34:06 and LEO CARABALLO (Totowa, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) gave MSU a 4-0 lead at the half as he scored off an assist from FRANK LEPORE (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley).

Caraballo's second goal of the game at 61:56 made it 5-0 and the Red Hawks scoring was a capped off wuth three seconds left as FERNANDO YEAGER (Bloomfield, NJ/Brazil) scored his second goal of the game.

CHRIS OWEN (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) and Phil Batiatto (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) combined on the shutout for MSU, which outshot Centenary, 24-3 in the game.
