Jersey City, NJ (10/30/02) - Senior defender Andrew Angarano (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) blasted a one-timer from the right side of the box off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder
MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), just inside the right post at 78:25 of the second half, as Montclair State University ended a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over New Jersey City University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
The Gothic Knights fall to 9-8-1 overall, and 2-5-1 in the NJAC. The Red Hawks are now 10-5-1, and 3-4-1 in the league. The 1-0 loss was the fifth such score against the Knights this season.
MSU narrowly outshot NJCU by a 17-16 margin, and owned a 5-2 difference in shots on goal. NJCU held an 11-6 edge in the second half. Each team attempted four corner kicks.
Angarano's goal was the first of the season after having three previous assists. Caswell's assist was his seventh of the season, and 13th point. The assist ties him for the NJAC lead with NJCU's Chris Rejano (Montclair, NJ/Montclair).
Angarano nearly scored minutes earlier, but his netted shot at 66:10 was negated by his own hand ball in the box.
Sophomore goalkeeper
CHRIS OWEN (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) made two saves for the Red Hawks, to register his seventh shutout of the season, and the teams' 10th. Owen lowered his goals against average to 0.72 overall. NJCU sophomore keeper Baba Guisse (Jersey City, NJ/Lycee Eugene Delacroix, France) played well for the Knights, making four saves, but had no chance to stop the game-winner.
The Red Hawks return to action Saturday, November 2nd as they host defending NCAA Division III champion Richard Stockton College at MSU Soccer Park. It will be Senior Day as the Red Hawks honor their seven graduating seniors.
