Upper Montclair, NJ (11/19/02) - The Montclair State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams both opened their 2002-03 home campaigns tonight against Adelphi (NY) University at Panzer Pool. The MSU men won, 87-58, while the MSU women triumphed, 89-72. Both Montclair State teams are now 1-1 overall this season.
Montclair sophomore COLLEEN GRIFFIN (Bloomfield, NJ/Lacordaire Academy) set a new school record and a new Panzer Pool record by winning the Women's 50 Yard Freestyle in a time of 24.83 seconds. She broke Janet Taylor's 17-year-old mark of 24.86 seconds set during the NCAAs back on March 14, 1985. Griffin also finished first in tonight's 200 Backstroke, in a time of 2:17.56 minutes.
MSU junior DANIELLE FLORIO (Lyndhurst, NJ/St. Dominic's) won the 1000 Freestyle (12:14.02), while classmate AMY GRAMMAS (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo Central) claimed the 200 Freestyle (2:13.75) and freshman SUMMER ROSS (Morristown, NJ/Roxbury) won the 200 Intermedley (2:36.27). Senior REGINA POTOCNIE (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) won the 200 Fly (2:20.73), sophomore DIANA GIL (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) took the 100 Freestyle (1:00.04), and classmate RACHEL YANNUZZI (Fairview, NJ/Paramus Catholic) won the 200 Breaststroke (2:50.45).
On the men's side, MSU junior PETER SINAGRA (North Bergen, NJ/St. Joseph's) collected the 1000 Freestyle (11:18.03), while sophomore MARK JAMIESON (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) won the 200 Freestyle (2:02.48) and classmate SHANE SCHWARTZ (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) garnered the 200 Fly (2:10.87). Schwartz also won the 500 Free (5:21.02) while Senior EDDIE FERNANDEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Joseph's) was victorious in the 200 Breaststroke (2:29.38). Fernandez also helped the Red Hawks to the win in the 400 Medley Relay in a time of 4:06.92.
Both MSU swim teams will now return to action this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23 at the Kutztown (PA) Invitational.
