Upper Montclair, NJ (11/02/02) - The Montclair State University field hockey team's five-game winning streak came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Juniata (PA) College tonight at Sprague Field. The Red Hawks outshot the visiting Eagles, 19-5, in falling to 11-4-0 overall this season, while Juniata improved to 13-6-1. MSU is also now 5-2 at home this fall, after its first Sprague Field loss since Oct. 12.
MSU also outcornered Juniata, 27-3.
Juniata senior midfielder JESS HEBEL (Grantville, PA/Northern Lebanaon) scored the only goal of the game at 47:40, deflecting home a shot by sophomore JEAN SILVEY (Airville, PA/Red Lion). MSU junior goalkeeper
TRISHA WINKLE (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) had one save for the host Red Hawks, who outshot the Eagles, 10-1, in the first half, and 9-4 in the second stanza.
Juniata sophomore netminder MELONIE SAPPE' (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) turned aside 10 Montclair shots in recording her third straight shutout, including a game-high five on-goal attempts by MSU junior forward Megan Ulicny (Edgewood, NJ/Edgewood), the biggest one coming on a point-blank try with less than ten minutes left in regulation. Sappe' also stopped MSU junior defender Jen Carbonaro (Howell, NJ/Howell) on a penalty stroke at 20:47 of the first half.
Montclair State closes out the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. when the Red Hawks host Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference tilt at Sprague Field on Senior Night. MSU is 2-1 in NJAC play so far this season.
