Wayne, NJ (11/5/02) — The Montclair State women's soccer team got goals from four different players as they defeated second-seeded William Paterson, 4-0, in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at Wightman Field on Tuesday evening.
The third-seeded Red Hawks (11-5-2) will face top-seeded The College of New Jersey in the NJAC Championship Game on Friday, November 8th in Ewing. TCNJ advanced with a 1-0 win over fourth-seeded Richard Stockton.
It will be the first time Montclair has advanced to the NJAC title contest. Prior to this evening's victory, MSU had never won an NJAC Tournament game. The game will also be a rematch of a contest won by TCNJ, 3-0 on October 26th. The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the 1999 NJAC Tournament with TCNJ advancing on penalty kicks, 4-3.
Montclair, which won for the eighth time in its last nine games, got on the board in the 23rd minute as freshman JESS AMENDOLA (Union, NJ/Union) notched her fourth goal of the season with a volley over goaltender Meaghan Koppel's head.
Freshman KELLY DUTKO (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) made it 2-0 with 6:01 to play in the first half ans sophomore
STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS (Edison, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) provided a crushing blow with her 11th goal with just 12 seconds left in the first half for a 3-0 lead.
Freshman KAYLIN VAN BROOKHOVEN (Wyckoff, NJ/Wyckoff) capped off the scoring with 3:22 to play as she scored her second goal of the season.
STEPHANIE ROMANKO (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) made two saves to record her 12th shutout of the season and 43rd of her career. The Red Hawks outshot William Paterson, 9-5.
The win by MSU avenged a 1-0 loss to William Paterson at Sprague Field back on October 2nd. In the last 10 games, Montclair is 8-2 with the losses coming to WPU and TCNJ.
