Upper Montclair, NJ (12/04/02) - The Montclair State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams suffered a sweep tonight to visiting NCAA Division II Kutztown (PA) University at Montclair's Panzer Pool. The Red Hawk men lost, 113-84, to fall to 2-3 overall, while the MSU women fell, 116.5-83.5, and are now 3-3 on the season.
Montclair State sophomore COLLEEN GRIFFIN (Bloomfield, NJ/Lacordaire Academy) finished first in the Women's 50 Yard Freestyle, in a time of 25.44 seconds, and was second in the Women's 200 Backstroke in 2:21.86 minutes. Senior REGINA POTOCNIE (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) took first place in the Women's 200 Fly (2:22.20), while sophomore DIANA GIL (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) claimed second in the Women's 100 Freestyle (1:00.15). Junior DEENA HAMDAN (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) took the Women's 200 Breaststroke (2:53.36) and combined with Gil and Hamdan for a first-place MSU finish in the Women's 400 Free Relay (4:09.38) along with junior AMY GRAMMAS (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo Central).
Montclair sophomore SEAN MONTGOMERY (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) won the Men's 200 IM in 2:09.70 minutes, and also won the Men's 200 Backstroke (2:07.35). Classmate SHANE SCHWARZ (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) finished second in the Men's 200 Fly (2:13.04), and senior EDDIE FERNANDEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Joseph's) finished first in the 200 Breast (2:07.35). All three also helped MSU to a win in the Men's 400 Free Relay (3:33.67), along with freshman JEFF VELLA (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North).
Both Red Hawk swim teams are now off until visiting Kings Point (NY) University on Friday, Dec. 13, at 6:00 p.m.
