TCNJ Tops Women's Hoops in Season Finale

Upper Montclair, NJ - The 2001-02 Montclair State University women's basketball season came to an end with a 77-62 loss to The College of New Jersey on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Panzer Gymnasium.

Montclair finished the season at 12-13 overall and 8-10 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play, finishing sixth in the conference. The loss eliminated MSU from ECAC Tournament consideration.

Junior center JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ) paced MSU with 17 points and nine rebounds against TCNJ, leading the Red Hawks in scoring for the 21st time this season in 25 games. TCNJ, though, went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-3 lead early on and never trailed the rest of the way in earning its 10th consecutive win and sewing up first place in the conference.

ADRIENNE WARNER led all players with 21 points and added eight rebounds and four assists, while LAURA MALA contributed 16 points and three blocks for the Lions. MSU shot 34 percent from the field but was 9-for-11 from the free throw line.

Saturday also marked the final game for Red Hawk seniors STEPHANIE ELLERBE (Pennsauken, NJ) and KATHY BARBERI (Whitestone, NY). Ellerbe played in 101 games for MSU from 1997 through 2001, tallying 852 points and 565 rebounds, and set a new school record with 80 career three-point field goals. Barberi joined the Red Hawks this winter after transferring from Regis (MA) College, and averaged 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for Montclair.

Ellerbe had seven points, three rebounds, and three assists against TCNJ in the finale, including her record-setting three-point shot, while Barberi collected 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
