Allentown, PA (3/15/02) -- Junior attack JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) scored four times and CATHY HOMIEK (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) added two goals and a school-record six assists as Montclair State opened the 2002 season with a 13-8 victory over Cedar Crest on Friday afternoon.

KRISTEN MISKEY (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and JESS HANN (washington, NJ/Warren Hills) added three and two goals, respectively, for the Red Hawks (1-0), who jumped out to a 9-0 halftime lead.

The win was the first for new co-head coaches ALISON BONAVITA and JOHN GRECO.

Gangemi snapped scoreless tie with 26:14 in the first half as she scored off an assist from Homiek. Miskey and LEA SMITH (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) extended the lead to 3-0 as they scored 31 seconds apart. Homiek made it a 5-0 contest six minutes later and Gangemi's goal with 11:05 left in the half gave the Red Hawks a 6-0 lead. LORI BURNS (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) scored with 9:46 to make it a seven-goal lead before Miskey closed out the half with her other two tallies.

Homiek, who finished fourth in the nation in assists last season, broke her own school record of five set ironically against Cedar Crest one year ago and equalled versus Kean on April 14, 2001.

DIANA GIL (Landing, NJ/Rosbury) made nine saves in goal for MSU, which was outshot by Cedar Crest, 28-23.
