Fort Myers, FL (3/15/02) -- The Montclair State softball team closed out their 2002 Florida trip at 7-3 as they posted a pair of victories in the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday afternoon. The Red Hawks blanked Wilmington (OH), 2-0 and defeated Wheaton (IL), 7-3.
Senior righthander tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener while second baseman TARA GIALANELLA (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) and KARI McDONNELL (Wirghtstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) combined for three hits and three RBI in the win over Wheaton.
The Red Hawks snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning against Wilmington as STEPHANIE ROMANKO (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) and VALERIE TAURIELLO (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) each scored a run. MEGAN SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) had a sacrifice fly.
The rest was left for Todaro, who tossed her second shutout of the season. Todaro threw a no-hitter against St. Mary's (IN) on March 11. The righthander struck out eight and walked two.
In the second game, Sweeney improved to 4-1 on the season as she allowed five hits and three unearned runs. The righty stuckout five and walked one.
MSU jumped out to a 7-0 before Wheaton (IL) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Gialanella finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while McDonnell was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
MEGAN SWEENEY scored two runs for the Red Hawks.
MSU returns to action on Friday, March 22 as they host the Montclair State/Kean Softball Classic at the Quarry Field. The Red Hawks will face Muhlenberg and Cortland on Friday. The tournament then wraps on on Saturday as MSU takes on Ithaca College and Bridgewater State (MA).
