Softball Takes Pair From Rutgers-Camden

Camden, NJ (04/20/02) - The Montclair State University softball team stretched its winning streak to 10 games on Saturday with a two-step sweep at Rutgers-Camden. The Red Hawks won Game #1, 5-1 and then took the nightcap, 4-2 for their fifth and sixth straight victories in New Jersey Athletic Conference play. MSU is now 23-9 overall and 10-4 in the NJAC. Montclair has now won all 14 meetings all-time against the Scarlet Raptors, and is 4-0 versus the Scarlet Raptors since the series resumed last season.

The Red Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game one when freshman infielder KARI McDONNELL (Wrightstown, NJ) belted a three-run homer, her ninth of th season. McDonnell also doubled in the sixth inning, and her teammated added two runs in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Senior TARA TODARO (Lodi, NJ) picked up the win for Montclair, improving to 11-5 on the year allowing just six hits while striking out six and walking two. SARAH O'MALLEY (Westmont, NJ) took the loss for the Scarlet Raptors.

MSU took a 1-0 lead i the second game as McDonnell and DIANA AUTERI (Lyndhurst, NJ) walked to lead off the game. McDonnell then scored on an RBI single MEGAN SWEENEY (Edison, NJ). The Red Hawks extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth as they took advantage of two Rutgers-Camden errors. After the Scarlet Raptors tied the game in the top of the sixth, MSU rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ) doubled home a run and pinch-runner JOELLE FATA (Bloomfield, NJ) scored on a wild-pitch for a 4-2 Montclair lead.

CRYSTAL SWEENEY picked up the win to raise her record to 12-5. Sweeney allowed three hits, two runs, struck out three and walked two. McDonnell walked four times in the game to tie the Montclair State single-game record. McDonnell tied the mark held by Santa Pandolfo in 1977 and tied by Tracey Burke against Tiffin (OH) in 1988.
