Little Falls, NJ (4/6/02) - Rowan shortstop ERIN BYRNE (Hainesport, NJ/Rancoas Valley) doubled home the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Profs and Montclair State split a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at MSU's Quarry Field on Saturday afternoon.The Red Hawks (13-7, 4-2 NJAC) won the first game 5-2 with Rowan (15-9, 4-2 NJAC) taking the nightcap, 2-1.
Byrne, who drove in both Rowan runs in the game, gave the Profs the win in the second game as she doubled to right field scoring JoANNE DeVITO (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) from second base.
Rowan trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning as NICOLE HEWITT (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on an error. After a pop-up, Bryne lined a single to center field tying the game at 1-1.
SARA DICKEY (Skippack, PA/Perkiomen Valley) picked up the win. Dickey (5-4) allowed five hits and one unearned run. She struck out five, walked one and pitched out of a jam in the fourth as she held MSU to just one run.
With one out and a runner at first, SHANNA LeCOMPTE (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) doubled and pinch-runner JOELLE FATA (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) scored when the relay throw skipped away to give Montclair a 1-0 lead. LeCompte moved to third on the play and STEPHANIE ROMANKO (N. Brunswick, NJ/N.Brunswick) reached on an infield single. Romanko then stole second, but Dickey got the next two outs to keep the deficit at a run.
CYRSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) took the loss. Sweeney (7-4), allowed five hits, two unearned runs, struck out seven and walking one.
In the first game, Montclair's KARI McDONNELL (Wrightstown, NJ/N. Burlington) gave Montclair a 1-0 lead in the first as she belted a solo homer, her fifth of the season. Rowan tied it in the fifth as AMANDA BRADLEY (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) singled home a run, but MSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
TONYA BARNES (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) doubled in a pair of runs and Fata delivered an RBI double for a 4-1 lead. Romanko then recorded an RBI single for a 5-1 Red Hawk advantage.
TARA TODARO (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) earned the win. Todaro (6-3) allowed two runs and five hits, struck out five and walked four. JULIE UNDERCUFFLER (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) took the loss. Undercuffler allowed nine hits and five runs (two earned). She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
