Upper Montclair, NJ (9/07/02) - The Montclair State University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 5-1 win over Castleton State (VT) College today in its 2002 home opener at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field.
The Red Hawks thus won their first game of the 2002 Ramada Inn Cup, and will now host Delaware Valley College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. DVC fell at William Paterson University today, 2-0, in Wayne, NJ.
Sophomore midfielder MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ) scored MSU's first two goals of the game in the first 32 minutes of play, while senior forward ATTIBA YUSUF (East Orange, NJ) added another goal just under eight minutes before halftime for a 3-0 MSU lead.
MSU freshman defender MIKE HOGAN (Parsippany, NJ) headed in his own rebound early in the second half to make it 4-0, before Castleton junior striker LUKE LAROCHE(Colchester, VT) got the Spartans on the scoreboard on a breakaway with 31 minutes left.
Montclair senior back SEAN PASIEKA (Kinnelon, NJ) closed out the scoring by converting a penalty kick with just under 11 minutes remaining in regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper CHRIS OWEN (Pompton Lakes, NJ) made seven saves for the Red Hawks, while junior JASON APRUZZESE (Torrington, CT) stopped 13 shots for Castleton, which was outshot, 30-13.
