Women's Basketball Drops Decision at William Paterson

Wayne, NJ (1/15/03) - Junior guard Kat McPhail (Sparta, NJ/Hopatcong) went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe over the final 2:46 as William Paterson used a game-ending 10-4 run to defeat Montclair State, 64-58, Wednesday evening at the Rec Center in NJAC women's basketball action.

Senior guard Katie Morris (Deptford, NJ) led William Paterson (6-8, 3-4 NJAC) with 19 points, while McPhail dropped in 18 and added seven rebounds and six assists and senior forward Jeanine Day (Green Brook, NJ/Kearny) had 10 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. The Pioneers have now won two straight.

Montclair State (7-5, 3-4 NJAC) trailed by as many as nine, 52-43, on a lay-up with 5:17. However, the Red Hawks used an 11-2 spurt to tie the game at 54-all after a pair of free throws by freshman center EBONY ALLEN (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson), who led all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds. They only managed one field goal over the final 5:17 and shot 25.0 percent (18 of 72) for the game. Senior center JASMINE BATTS (Carteret, NJ) contributed 18 points off the bench for the Red Hawks.

William Paterson stormed out to an 11-4 lead in the first 6:20 thanks to four points apiece from Day and Morris. The Pioneer defense proceeded to hold the Red Hawks without a field goal for 7:52, a dry spell broken by an Allen lay-up. Allen scored five of her nine points in the first half during a 14-6 run to conclude the first 20 minutes as MSU pulled within 23-21 at intermission despite shooting just 7-of-33 (21.2 percent) from the field. She also pulled down seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play.
