Swim Tops Drew; Men's Team Knocks Off Vassar

Madison, NJ (01/29/03) - The Montclair State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams each recorded victories tonight in a meet at Drew University. The Red Hawk women (7-5 overall) defeated host Drew, 113-89, while the MSU men (5-5 overall) edged Drew, 104-101, and defeated Vassar, 118-87. The Drew men also beat Vassar, 105-93.

Montclair sophomore COLLEEN GRIFFIN (Bloomfield, NJ/Lacordaire Academy) won the Women's 50 Free against Drew in 25:09 seconds, while junior AMY GRAMMAS (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo Central) claimed the Women's 200 Fly in 2:28.37 minutes. Junior MEAGHAN KILGALLEN (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Immaculate Heart) took the Women's 100 Free in 58.81 seconds before senior REGINA POTOCNIE (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) won the 500 Free in 5:36.81 minutes. Potocnie then helped MSU to a first-place finish in the Women's 400 Free Relay in 4:04.14.

Sophomore JONATHAN SINDALL (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) won the Men's 200 Free in 1:58.04 minutes versus Drew. He also helped the Red Hawks to a first-place finish in the Men's 400 Medley Relay in 3:59.71 minutes. Junior JASON MARTINELLI (West New York, NJ/St. Joseph's) took the Men's 50 Free in 23.01 seconds over both Drew and Vassar, while sophomore SHANE SCHWARZ (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) did the same in the 200 Fly, winning in 2:08.99 minutes. Schwarz also took the Men's 1000 Free versus Vassar, in 11:03.26 minutes, and then won the Men's 500 Free in 5:18.53 minutes. Senior EDDIE FERNANDEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Joseph's) claimed the Men's 100 Free versus Vassar in 50.80 seconds.

Both Montclair State swim teams will return to the pool at William Paterson University on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 6:00 p.m.
