Men's Soccer Tripped Up by Stockton

Pomona, NJ (11/1/03) --- The eighth-ranked Montclair State University men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 3-1 score today at Richard Stockton College in its 2003 regular-season finale.

The win clinched the 2003 New Jersey Athletic Conference regular season title for Stockton (12-6-2, 7-1-2 NJAC), which snapped MSU's 13-game unbeaten streak while also handing the Red Hawks their first loss since Sept. 10. Montclair (14-2-3, 5-1-3 NJAC) still finished second in the NJAC standings, still received a first-round bye in the NJAC Tournament, and will host either #3 Rowan or #6 New Jersey City in a conference semifinal game on Thursday, Nov. 6, at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field.

A.J. DeBarno scored two of Stockton's goals, including the game-winner at 48:26 of regulation. DeBarno had opened the scoring just 6:15 into the game, before senior back JEFF FIORINO (Scotch Plains, NJ/SP-Fanwood) tied it for the Red Hawks at 43:14. Scott Adams then tallied an insurance goal for the host Ospreys at 76:04 to close out the scoring. Both team had nine shots on the afternoon, while Stockton outcornered MSU, 7-4.

Sean Dallas had six saves in net for the Ospreys, while sophomore EDGARD DINTEN (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) had five stops for the Red Hawks in absorbing his first career defeat after starting off 8-0-2.
