Washington, DC (11/30/03) - Montclair State was dominant in the paint and played strong perimeter defense and the combination proved deadly to Southwestern University in the championship game of the Gallaudet University Women's Basketball Holiday Tournament. The Redhawks were able to cruise throughout the second half to a 75-54 win over Southwestern.
EBONY ALLEN, the tournament's most valuable player, scored a game-high 22 points and added seven rebounds.
PAM BARONE, a member of the all-tournament team, added 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Montclair State scored 40 of its points in the paint and held Southwestern to a .284 shooting percentage. The Red Hawks also harassed Southwestern into committing 18 turnovers. Most importantly, they enjoyed a 49-31 advantage in rebounding, which more than made up for 11 of 26 shooting from the free-throw line.
An 11-0 run with fewer than five minutes to play in the first half gave Montclair State a 13-point halftime cushion and while Southwestern closed to within nine early in the second half, a 12-2 run ended any lingering threat.
Kristen Johnson had 12 points for Southwestern. She was the only player in double figures. Erin Nelson and Priyantha Kainthla made the all-tournament team for Southwestern.
