Rowan Tops No. 9 Field Hockey 3-1

Glassboro, NJ (11/04/03)  - The No. 9 Montclair State University field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision today at Rowan University in their regular-season finale. The win enabled Rowan to clinch the 2003 New Jersey Athletic Conference regular-season title, its second straight, on a head-to-head tiebreaker, as both schools finished with a 4-1 record in NJAC play this year.

Montclair, which has lost two consecutive games for the first time this fall, is now 14-4 overall.

The host Profs took a 2-0 lead into halftime and then made it a 3-0 game just over 12 minutes into the second half. Montclair senior forward SARAH LEVINE scored MSU's only goal on the day, her 13th of the campaign, at 54:38 to get the Red Hawks on the board. The goal was also the 83rd point of Levine's four-year career, breaking the school mark of 82 points set by Anna Wimberg back in 1977. Assists went to junior LISA SMICKLO and senior MEGAN ULICNY, with Ulicny adding to her school-record total with her 49th point this season. She also leads the Red Hawks with 15 goals and 19 assists this fall.

Senior Beth Raleigh tallied Rowan's two goals, including the game-winner, after classmate Becky Peterson opened the scoring just 38 seconds into the contest. Senior goalkeeper TRISHA WINKLE finished with 12 saves for Montclair, including nine stops in the first half. Senior netminder Christine Buteas had four stops for the Profs. MSU was outshot, 19-6, while both teams had nine penalty-corner attempts.

The Red Hawks will now await their postseason fate and are still hopeful of gaining their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships. Bids to the 16-team NCAAs will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 9. MSU has qualified for the last three ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Tournaments, four of them in all, finishing first in both 1990 and 2001. ECAC bids will be announced on Monday, Nov. 10.
