MSU Knocked Out of NJAC Tournament by Rowan

Glassboro, NJ (11/04/03) – The Montclair State University volleyball team completed its 2003 campaign tonight with a 3-0 first-round New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff loss at third-seeded Rowan University. The Profs defeated the Red Hawks by scores of 30-8, 30-15 and 30-17. Sixth-seeded MSU finishes the season with an overall 9-27 record, while defending NJAC champion Rowan (18-7 overall) advances to the conference semifinals at second-seeded Rutgers-Newark on Thursday, Nov. 6.

Senior hitter CARMEN ALVARADO (Newark, NJ/Barringer) led Montclair with seven kills in her final MSU match, while freshman hitter ASIA LIVINGSTON (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) contributed six kills. KELLY MCGUIRE (Upper Saddle River, NJ/No. Highlands) and Joanna Cortez (Paterson, NJ/East Side) each collected a team-high five digs, while setter JENNIFER OLAN (Jersey City, NJ/Academic) recorded 11 assists and one service ace.

Alvarado led MSU with 326 kills this season, good for sixth all-time at MSU for one season, and finished fourth all-time in school history with 685 kills over her four-year career. Olan recorded a career-high 720 assists this fall, giving her 1,727 assists over her three-year tenure and placing her third on MSU's career assist list. Cortez paced MSU this season with 212 digs, while BROOKSHIELD LAURENT (East Orange, NJ/Marylawn) led the Red Hawks with a career-best 60 total blocks, including 32 block assists. Alvarado led Montclair with 31 block solos, and also recorded 162 digs and 110 assists this season to finish with 74 block solos (eighth all-time), 457 digs (seventh) and 346 assists (eighth).
