Denison Tops Women's Lacrosse

Upper Montclair, NJ (03/29/03) - Denison (OH) University scored 10 unanswered second-half goals to blow open a three-goal contest in a 19-6 rout of Montclair State in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse action this morning at Sprague Field. The loss leaves MSU at 3-3 overall, while the visiting Big Red improves to 4-2 in winning its first contest on a four-game road swing.

Junior CATHY HOMIEK (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) paced the host Red Hawks with two goals and two assists, while senior JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) tallied two MSU goals and set up another. MSU took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first four minutes of the game, only to watch Denison score four straight goals to take the lead for good at 5-2 with 16:17 remaining in the first half. Junior LISA D'ARIES (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) and freshman BRIDGET FITZSIMMONS (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) tallied MSU's other goals, both in the first half. The Big Red took a 9-4 halftime lead, and after weathering goals by Homiek and Gangemi to start the second half, erupted for 10 consecutive scores in a span of just over 23 minutes to seal matters.

Leading the way offensively for Denison was senior LESLIE MASTERPAUL (Cleveland Heights, OH/Cleveland Heights) with five goals and one assist, including three second-half scores. Classmate STEPHANIE PRATZNER (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) tallied four goals and one assist, while freshman ELIZABETH HOLLICK (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park Country Day) and COURTNEY ABRAMS (Washington D.C. /Bullis School) and senior MARY KEATING (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) all scored twice for Denison, with Hollick and Keating also setting up two goals and Abrams one.

Sophomore LISA SMICKLO (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) had 13 saves in starting for Montclair State, which was outshot, 37-17. Junior KELLY GRADY (Howell, NJ/Howell) played the last 9:32 for MSU, stopping two Denison shots. Senior ABIGAIL STEWART (Worthington, OH/Kilbourne) had five saves for Denison.

MSU will now host Eastern (PA) College on Tuesday, April 1, at 4:00 p.m. at Sprague Field, while Denison visits William Smith (NY) College on April 5 at 11:00 a.m.
