No. 7 Softball Powers Past Rutgers-Newark

Little Falls, NJ (04/15/03) - The Montclair State University softball team, ranked seventh nationally in NCAA Division III, broke a three-game winless streak by pounding out 28 hits 19 RBIs and six doubles in a sweep of Rutgers-Newark, 7-0 and 14-0, today at MSU's Quarry Field. The host Red Hawks improve to 20-4 overall and 5-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while the visiting Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-17 on the year and 0-10 in league play. MSU has also now posted 11 shutouts this season, three in conference action.

Freshman infielder ATHANASIA TOTARO (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) led MSU offensively, batting 3-for-4 on the day (.750) while driving in four runs and scoring two. Sophomore infielder KARI McDONNELL (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) finished 3-for-6 with four runs and two RBIs while tying a 15-year-old school record with her 16th career home run. Junior outfielder STEPHANIE ROMANKO (N. Brunswick, NJ/N. Brunswick) went 3-for-5 at the plate and batted in three runs, while sophomore infielder NICOLE PACICCO (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) and junior shortstop DIANA AUTERI (Lyndhurst, NJ/St. Mary's) each finished 4-for-8. Auteri also scored two runs while Pacicco recorded three, as did sophomore outfielder MEGAN SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison). Freshman infielder MEGAN SHAPIRO (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) led Rutgers by going 2-for-5.

MSU junior CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) improved to 12-2 this season, picking up the win in the opener in striking out six batters and allowing just three hits in six innings of work. Freshman KERRY LEE (Florence, NJ/N. Burlington) improved to 4-1 this year in gaining the victory in the nightcap, surrendering just one hit to go with one strikeout in three innings of the five-inning contest. Sophomore KRISTIN GERVASIO (Mendham, NJ/Randolph) mopped up in both games for Montclair, striking out two batters and allowing just one hit over three total innings. She also recorded her first career hit off a single in the second game, as did freshman infielder ANGELA LoPICCOLO (Edison, NJ/Edison).
