CRYSTAL SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) tossed a complete game in the opener and Montclair State, ranked seventh in Division III, used a three-run fifth to take the nightcap as the Red Hawks swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader from Kean on Tuesday afternoon.
MSU took the opener 5-1 and won the second game, 3-1 for its fifth straight win as they improved to 27-5 overall this season and 10-4 in the NJAC.
In the first game, Sweeney improved to 15-3 as she allowed only four hits and one run in the complete game. She struck out one and walked two. Montclair State got on the board in the second as
NICOLE PACICCO (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) belted a solo home run to center. Kean would tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Jessica Rios (Hamilton, NJ) collected and RBI single.
In the third, MSU took advantage of two hits and two errors to push across two runs.
DIANA AUTERI (Lyndhurst, NJ/St. Mary's) had an RBI single and
KARI MCDONNELL (Wrightstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) doubled and scored on an error as MSU built a 3-1 lead.
The Red Hawks tacked on a run in the fifth as
ATHANASIA TOTARO (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) plated a run with a run-scoring single.
DANA SPRAGUE (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) had an RBI single in the seventh to complete the MSU scoring.
McDonnell was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored while Auteri went 3-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game, Totaro struck out two and allowed four hits and a run as she upper her record to 5-1 on the year.
Scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, MSU scored three times benefiting from two Cougar errors. Auteri reached on an error to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Totaro. McDonnell singled to put runners and the corners before Sprague delivered and RBI single to deep center, scoring Auteri for a 1-0 lead.
MEGAN SWEENEY (Edison, NJ/Edison) extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single and pinch runner
ALLISON KREISS (Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) scored on a wild pitch as the Red Hawks took a 3-0 advantage.
Kean would mount a rally in the seventh as Jessica Kwiatkowski (Somerville, NJ) doubled home a run two out, but Totaro induced Allie Cenci to ground out to end the game.
STEPHANIE ROMANKO (No. Brunswick, NJ/No. Brunswick) was 2-for-3 for MSU while Sprague and Sweeney were each 1-for-3 with an RBI.
