Women's Lacrosse Topped by Manhattanville in Knickerbocker Semifinals

Purchase, NJ (04/30/03) - The 2003 Montclair State women's lacrosse campaign came to end today with a 16-10 loss at second-seeded Manhattanville College in the first round of the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference tournament. The third-seeded Red Hawks finished 7-8 overall in their first season under head coach Beth Gottung.

Montclair senior JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) tallied five goals and an assist for six points in her final game for MSU and finished the season with 76 goals and nine assists for 85 points, all career high marks. She wrapped up her Red Hawk career with 215 goals and 23 assists for 238 points in 58 career outings from 2000 to 2003, and holds the all-time MSU records for most goals in a season and in a career.

Red Hawk junior CATHY HOMIEK (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) paced MSU with two goals and six assists for eight points against Manhattanville, finishing the year with 27 goals and 70 assists for a team-leading 97 points. She now has 91-169--250 points through 41 games in her first three seasons in Upper Montclair, and holds school marks for career assists and points.

Classmate JESS HANN (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) scored two goals this afternoon, and freshman BRIDGET FITZSIMMONS (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) scored once and set up another goal. Sophomore goalkeeper LISA SMICKLO finished with 17 stops in the Montclair cage.

Senior midfielder Susan Horton (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck) led the host Valiants with five goals and two assists for seven points, scoring all of her goals in the final 18 minutes of play as the visiting Red Hawks pulled within two goals at 10-8. Manhattanville (6-8), which registered an 18-11 win at MSU back on April 9, will now face Stevens or Kean in the league championship game on Saturday, May 3, at the site of the highest remaining seed.
