Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Muhlenberg Hands No. 9 Field Hockey First Loss

Allentown, PA (09/20/03) - Junior Kristen Bruschi scored three second-half goals for her second hat trick in 10 days as the Muhlenberg field hockey team posted a dramatic 3-2 win over Montclair State in a matchup of teams ranked in the top 10 in Division III.

The Mules (7-0), who won their 11th straight dating back to last year, entered the game ranked 10th, while the Red Hawks (4-1), fresh off a 4-3 win against top-ranked New Jersey, were ninth.

Montclair scored the lone goal of the first half, as senior forward LEA SMITH scored off an assist from MEGAN ULICNY, but Muhlenberg tied the score early in the second half when Bruschi tipped a long corner from senior Alissa Maurer inside the far post. Less than five minutes later, the Mules took their first lead off one of their four penalty corners. Bruschi collected a rebound and took a shot that deflected off a Montclair defender and sailed across the goal line.

The Red Hawks knotted the score again with 12:31 on the clock when Ulicny slammed in a shot. However, just 16 seconds later, Bruschi took a long pass from sophomore Alexa Sterbinsky and barely nudged the shot past Montclair goalkeeper ROBYN APICELLI. Apicelli had replaced starter TRISHA WINKLE with just over 20 minutes remaining as Winkle left the game with an injury.

However, the game was not over yet, since Montclair came from two goals behind in the final three minutes to beat New Jersey last week and scored two goals in the final 90 seconds in a 3-2 win against Muhlenberg two years ago.

The Red Hawks had 11 penalty corners in the second half, including six after the go-ahead goal, but the Mules were able to hang on to their lead. Freshman Lauren Schram made all six of her saves in the second half. Winkle had four saves while Apicelli collected two.
