Upper Montclair, NJ (9/07/03) --- Freshman defender
BILL ANTHES (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) scored his first career goal on a diving header at the right post with 1:50 remaining in the second sudden-death overtime as the Montclair State University men's soccer team defeated Roger Williams (RI) University, 1-0, today at Sprague Field in the final round of the 2003 Ramada Inn Cup.
Anthes' header came off an assist from junior
MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), who redirected a corner kick by sophomore
SEAN HORAN (Tinton Falls, NJ/Red Bank Catholic). Horan, who scored a goal in MSU's 2-0 win over McDaniel (MD) College yesterday, was also chosen this year's Most Valuable Player.
Montclair is now 4-0 this fall, while Roger Williams, which edged host William Paterson University, 1-0, in OT yesterday, fell to 3-1 overall. It is the first time since the tournament originated back in 1998 that one team has won it in consecutive years, as MSU finished first last fall after previously claiming titles in 1998 and 2000. WPU won in both 1999 and 2001.
Montclair had a short flurry in front of the RWU net with just over five minutes left in the second overtime, only to be turned away on two shots, one by a defensive save. Anthes then connected for the game's only goal at 108:10 to give MSU its second straight Ramada Inn Cup, and fourth title in six seasons.
MSU sophomore goalkeeper
DAVID AVILES (Dover, NJ/Dover) finished with six saves for the Red Hawks, while freshman netminder D.J. Burns (Wakefield, RI/South Kingstown) had four stops for Roger Williams.
Aviles made a key save early on, leaping to knock away a shot from the right wing by RWU senior forward James Trill (Northfield, MA/Pioneer) with 20:28 left in the first half. The shot was targeted for the upper left corner of the MSU net. Red Hawk sophomore defender
KYLE HUGHES (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) then blocked a close-in shot by Hawks' senior forward Antonio Nunes (Bridgeport, CT/Notre Dame) at the left post with 13:25 left, before Aviles stopped Nunes again moments later. Montclair State then had back-to-back free kicks blocked with approximately six minutes left in the half, which finished scoreless.
MSU senior defender
STEVE LEONARD (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) was stopped from 30 yards out with 26:11 remaining in regulation, before firing a high shot over the net just under two minutes later from the same distance. Montclair sophomore back
MIKE HOGAN (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) then made a defensive save on Trill with Aviles out of the net moments later, before MSU's Horan struck the juncture of the crossbar and right post off a free kick from the right side with just over 21 minutes left.
MSU outshot RWC, 18-12, overall, and 5-1 in the two overtimes. The Red Hawks took 11 corner kicks and had 22 fouls, while the visiting Hawks accumulated four corner kicks and six fouls.
MSU returns to action on Wednesday when it visits John Hopkins (MD) University, while RWU hosts the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
