Upper Montclair, NJ - Sophomore forward
GIAN PAUL GONZALEZ (North Haledon, NJ/Manchester Regional) put back a rebound as time expired to lift Montclair State to 65-63 victory over Richard Stockton in New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Anwar Montgomery (Scotch Plains, NJ/SP-Fanwood) scored a career-high 18 points and Gonzalez had 17 as the Red Hawks (9-6, 2-4 NJAC) squandered a 15-point second-half lead, but won for the second straight time. Brian Hiltner (Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit) had 18 points for Richard Stockton (10-7, 4-3 NJAC), which has dropped two straight.
Richard Stockton, which trailed throughout the game, forced the tie a 63-63 when Boo Evans (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township) hit the second of two free throws with 11 seconds to go. MSU took possession following an Osprey timeout and Montgomery received the inbound pass. He raced down the left sideline before dishing off to
LAMONT NEWELL (Lodi, NJ/Dwight Murrow), who then drove to the basket and lofted a shot that glanced off the rim. However, Gonzalez was there to collect the rebound and put it off the glass for the winning points.
Montclair State held a 40-25 lead seconds into the second half as
MICHAEL DAVIS (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) connected on a short jumper. But Richard Stockton chipped away at the lead and got within 63-59 with 1:20 to play as Jose Rodriguez (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) nailed a three-pointer. MSU then missed an opportunity to extended the lead as it missed two free throws and Rob Freeney (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) made it 63-62 as he completed a conventional three-point play with 41 seconds left. Montclair then failed to convert on a 1-and-1 with 33 seconds and Richard Stockton got the equalizer as Evans was fouled with 11 seconds remaining.
Newell finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Montclair State, which also got an 11-point effort off the bench by freshman forward James Kosior (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional).
Gonzalez had nine rebounds while Montgomery added four rebounds and four assists. The Red Hawks shot 52 percent (15-of-29) in the first half en route to a 38-25 lead at intermission. Rodriguez collected 14 points while Hiltner grabbed six rebounds.
The Ospreys shot 49 percent for the game, including 54 percent (14-of-26) in the second half, but were outrebounded 34-26, including 12-5 on the offensive glass.
