Allen, Machin Notch Double-Doubles in Win

Upper Montclair, NJ (1/24/04) - Sophomore forward EBONY ALLEN (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) and freshman STEPHANIE MACHIN (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) each collected double-doubles as Montclair State won its third straight with a 77-68 victory over Richard Stockton in New Jersey Athletic Women's Basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (13-3, 4-2) put five players in double figures as it defeated the Ospreys for the first time since January 27, 2001 (80-67 win at Pomona, NJ) —a span of six games, which included two losses in the ECAC Division III Metro Tournament. Allen collected 20 points and 11 rebounds while Machin had 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Montclair State led 36-27 at halftime and held a 47-38 lead with just over 14 minutes to go before Richard Stockton went on a 16-2 run over the next nine minutes to take five-point lead. Lisa Zak (Bayville, NJ/Toms River South) began the run with a free throw and later added two more to pull Stockton within 47-41 at the 12:10 mark. After a Machin basket, the Ospreys scored the next 13 points to take the lead. Mason drained a three and Alicia Morris (Easthamtpon, NJ/Rancocas Valley) made it 49-48 with a layup. Jenna Shenk (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Bishop Eustace) then put Richard Stockton in front with a three before Mason capped the run with another three-pointer to give the Ospreys as 54-49 lead with 7:17 to play.

MSU then responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead. VANESSA DEFREITAS (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) nailed a three and AMANDA MULLANEY's (Brooklyn, NJ/Bishop Ford) consecutive layups put MSU in front 57-54 with 5:41 left. Jacki Crocker (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) would score on a layup to put Richard Stockton ahead 60-59 before Montclair State took control of the game with an 11-3 run. KRISTEN POTENZONE (Totowa, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and DeFreitas each scored on the fast break to make the score 63-60 and Potenzone converted another layup for a 66-60 lead with 1:50 to go.

Mason's three would get the Ospreys within 66-63, however, Machin sank a pair of foul shots and Allen scored a basket to put the Red Hawks up 70-64 with 41 seconds left. Potenzone and Mullaney each finished with 11 while PAM BARONE (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) had 10 points and eight assists.

DeFreitas had eight assists for the Red Hawks, who shot 54 percent (30-of-55) for the game and overcame 26 turnovers. Mullaney had eight rebounds.
