Rowan Hands MSU 3-1 Loss

Montclair, NJ (10/12/04) - The Montclair State University volleyball team came up on the short end of a 3-1 score tonight against Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference volleyball match at Panzer Gymnasium.

Rowan took the first two games by 30-19 and 30-15 scores, respectively, and won a seesaw fourth game by a 35-33 count after MSU had averted a sweep with a 30-28 triumph in the third contest. Montclair State, which is winless in its last seven matches, falls to 6-18 overall and 1-4 in NJAC play, while Rowan improves to 16-3 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in the conference.

The visiting Profs overcame a 12-3 deficit to take the first game tonight, and then nearly came back after trailing 20-12 in the third game. The Profs then survived five consecutive MSU game points before emerging with the win in the fourth and final contest to wrap up the win, its fourth straight over Montclair State since 2001.

Rowan sophomore hitter Lauren Haney led all players with 17 kills, while junior blocker Jennifer Spargo added 12 kills and a team-leading six blocks. Junior setter Joelle McNulty registered 44 assists for the Profs, and was one of four Rowan players to collect nine digs on the night.

Senior hitter TIFFANY ACIZ, playing in her final home regular-season match, paced Montclair State with 10 kills in the four games, while sophomore hitter HEATHER ACIZ posted seven kills, seven digs and a team-high four service aces. Sophomore setter ELYSE GRYWALSKI recorded 23 assists for the Red Hawks, while junior hitter KELLY MCGUIRE collected a team-best 10 digs, and sophomore hitter ASIA LIVINGSTON finished with seven kills and six digs.

MSU now visits Kings (PA) on Saturday, Oct. 16, after Rowan hosts Wheaton (IL) College the night before in Glassboro, NJ
