JENNIFER TANIS scored the lone goal and junior
ROBYN APICELLI made nine saves as Montclair State, ranked sixth in Division III, edged Drew University, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Hawks won their second straight and improved to 12-2 on the season. Drew fell to 9-5 with the loss as its five-game winning streak came to a halt.
Scoreless for the first 66 minutes of play, Montclair State finally broke through as Tanis scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season with 3:15 to play in the contest. Taking a pass from
DANIELLE PICINICH, Tanis banged home the tiebreaking score, her fourth game-winning tally of the year.
Apicelli came through with nine saves, including two on penalty strokes as she kept the game scoreless before Tanis' goal. The shutout was Apicelli's sixth this season.
Each team had 11 shots in the contest with Drew holding an 8-6 edge in penalty corners. Tara Connelly had six saves for Drew.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 23 as they travel to Ewing to face The College of New Jersey in a showdown for the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship. The winner of the game will earn the league title and automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey championships.
