Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls to Muhlenberg in Tournament Finale

Allentown, PA (11/20/04) - The Montclair State women's basketball team placed four players in double figures, however, it wasn't enough as the Red Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, 89-74 to host Muhlenberg in the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament on Saturday evening.

STEPHANIE MACHIN and SHIKEENA LYNARD were both named to the All-Tournament Team as the Red Hawks fell to 1-1. Machin finished with a team-high 17 points while Lynard added 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

A solid shooting effort in the first half helped Montclair State build a 42-37 halftime lead. MSU shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field while holding the host Mules (2-0) to just 29 percent (11-of-37).

But things reversed in the second half as Muhlenberg found it shooting touch, especially from behind the arc, while the Red Hawks faltered just a bit. The Mules, who placed five players in double figures, connected on 17-of-30 from the field, including a sizzling 10-of-18 at the three-point line.

Gwen Doyle, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, finished with 15 points as did Kristen Piscaldo. Tiffany Kirk added 12 with Valerie Robuck and Emily Wright also chipping in with 10 points apiece.

For Montclair State, freshman JENNIFER RUSSELL had 14 points and five rebounds while JESSICA GARRABRANT added 13 and six caroms.

The Red Hawks are now off until Monday, November 29 as they host the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers-Camden in their 2004-05 home opener at Panzer Gymnasium.
