Staten Island, NY - Michael Stewart sank a pair of free throws with 19 seconds remaining as the College of Staten Island knocked off Montclair State, 70-67, in NCAA Division III men's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
Stewart finished with 21 points for the Dolphins (2-1), who defeated the Red Hawks (2-1) for just the second time in 10 meetings between the schools.
GIAN PAUL GONZALEZ tallied a game-high 30 points, including 21 in the second half as MSU erased an eight-point halftime deficit.
Gonzalez gave Montclair State its first lead of the second half as he put in a layup with 3:29 to play to make the score 65-64. Another short jumper by Gonzalez gave the Red Hawks a three-point lead with 2:41 left, but Stewart cut the deficit to one as he scored on a driving layup for a 67-66 MSU lead with 1:38 to play.
Stewart had a chance to put CSI in front with 50 seconds remaining, but missed two foul shots. However, Montclair had a chance to extend its lead but
ANTHONY LARKIN misfired on a three-pointer with 21 seconds left and Stewart was fouled on the ensuing Dolphin possession.
Stewart, who was 0-for-4 from the charity stripe up to that point, calmly stepped to the line and buried both foul shots. Montclair State had one last chance, but the Red Hawks committed the last of their 22 turnovers as Terry Downing made a steal and flipped ahead to Mike Jones for a layup to seal the game.
Jason Coke dded 14 points while John Smith had 13 and eight rebounds for CSI, which got four rebounds and nine assists from Stewart, who played all 40 minutes of the contest.
MICHAEL GLUCK and
RASHAD BUTLER each had 14 points for Montclair State, which shot 14-of-16 from the free throw line, but managed just 1-of-11 from behind the three-point arc. Gluck grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds with Gonzalez and Butler each pulling down eight.
QUENTIN DEMERITTE had nine points and six rebounds.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, December 1 as they face local rival William Paterson in their NJAC and home opener at Panzer Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
