Red Hawks Fall in Double-OT to C.W. Post in Regular-Season Finale

Montclair, NJ (11/03/04) - Senior midfielder Becky Winkel, who assisted on the first goal, scored with 1:20 left in the second overtime as C.W. Post outlasted Montclair State, 2-1, in field hockey action at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Caitlin Flynn got the other goal for the Pioneers (4-14), who were outshot 29-11 in the contest, but stayed in the game thanks in part to a tremendous effort from goalkeeper Pam Guernaccini, who made 20 saves, including nine in the two overtime periods.

JEN SOSS had a goal for the Red Hawks (12-6), who have dropped four straight. MSU will now await to see if it will be one of the eight teams selected for the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship. Bids will be announced on Monday, November 8.

Playing 7-on-7 in the second overtime, Guernaccini made three stops, including one on a shot from JENNIFER TANIS with 2:31 to play. Back the other way came C.W. Post and the Pioneers were able to convert as Elaine Williams fed Winkel on right side. Winkel then made a move to her right before wielding a shot past MSU keeper ROBYN APICELLI for her sixth of the year and the game-winner.

Flynn gave C.W. Post the lead 76 seconds into the match as she stuffed home a rebound from in front. Winkel's shot was stopped by Apicelli, however, the ball came loose and Flynn was there to put it in for her second of the season.

Montclair State would get even at the 17:51 mark as Soss collected her sixth tally of the season. Alex Kelly led Soss to within five yards before dropping a pass that Soss banged into the cage, tying the game at 1-1.

Apicelli made eight saves for Montclair State, which also held a 19-9 edge in penalty corners.
